What is Lifespan Integration?
Lifespan Integration therapy (LI) is a revolutionary new method which was developed during the first decade of the 21st century. LI therapy is based on systems theory* and works with the client’s entire body-mind, not only the cognitive (thinking) part of the self. Traditional methods of psychotherapy (talking therapies) can help clients understand the reasons for their fears, insecurities, and reactions to current life situations, but do little to change their underlying unconscious programming.
The human body-mind is a self-organizing system which adapts and changes throughout one’s lifetime. People who experienced neglect, abandonment, or other trauma during childhood develop strategies and defense systems to help them survive. Many survivors of past trauma and neglect feel shame and blame themselves. During LI therapy sessions therapists stay deeply attuned to clients while leading them through a process wherein they repeatedly review the events of their lives. The LI method creates a therapeutic environment in which clients spontaneously become more solid within themselves and gain insights into their behaviors and reactions. LI therapy enhances the body-mind’s natural self-organizing capacity, creating a way for new information and insights to be absorbed, while building a more solid and coherent self-structure. Clients are often pleasantly surprised at how their behaviors, assumptions, and reactions spontaneously change after a course of LI therapy.
*Systems theory is a way of understanding the world by looking at how different parts of a system interact and influence each other, rather than focusing on individual components in isolation. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of elements within a whole, recognizing that a system’s behavior is more than the sum of its parts. It acknowledges that the behavior of a system cannot be fully understood by examining its individual elements in isolation.
